Indian Markets Mark Time Ahead Of Oct-Dec GDP Data

Indian shares were little changed on Tuesday after snapping a six-session winning streak in the previous session as investors took a pause ahead of key economic growth and fiscal deficit data due later in the day. Investors will be watching closely the gross domestic product (GDP) data to see if demand wilted in the final three months of last year following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surprise decision to ban high-value currency notes.

A Reuters poll of 30 economists taken over the past week showed economic growth slowed to 6.4 percent annually in the October-December quarter. "Only if growth falls below 5.5 percent or rises above 6.5 percent, would there be some need to re-assess India's growth trajectory in the period ahead," Deutsche Bank analysts wrote in a note.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil added 11 cents, or 0.2%, to $54.16 a barrel by 0337 GMT, while benchmark Brent crude oil added 17 cents, or 0.3%, to $56.10 a barrel. For the month, U.S. crude oil is up 2.6% after falling in January, while Brent oil has risen marginally.

Today Commodity Market News; ONGC To Take Control Of HPCL

India's state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp will take control of Hindustan Petroleum Corp as part of the government's plan to create an integrated public sector oil entity, the Economic Times daily reported on Monday citing top government officials. India plans to create a giant oil company by combining state-owned firms, finance minister Arun Jaitley said in the budget speech earlier this month as the world's third largest oil consumer looks to better compete with global majors in acquiring foreign assets.

"It is a very big decision. A cabinet note will soon be moved. The government of India will transfer its majority shareholding (of 51.11 percent in HPCL) to ONGC, which will then become the holding company of HPCL," the paper wrote citing one of the officials.

Commodity Market Tips; Oil Ticks Up On Supply Cuts

Oil prices edged higher on Monday, with Brent oil set to rise for five out of seven sessions as a global supply glut appears to ease, but rising U.S. production limited gains. Brent crude oil climbed 0.2 percent to $56.09 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate added 0.1 percent to $54.04 a barrel. Oil prices tumbled on Friday after U.S. Energy Information Administration data showed U.S. crude inventories rose for a seventh straight week. But the market has been supported within a tight $4 to $5 range since November, when the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other producers agreed to cut production. "EIA data showed stocks rose 564,000 barrels to 518.7 million last week," ANZ said in a note.

Commodity Market Tips; Funds Prepare $2 Billion Oil Market Play As Supply Tightens

Passive investment funds are poised to shift an estimated $2 billion from far-term to near-term crude futures over the next week, anticipating an energy market rally as a historic OPEC output cut slashes supply. The switch may foreshadow the end of a global oil glut that built up during a two-year price war. On Friday - for the first time in six years - a rule in one of the most popular commodity market indices was triggered, requiring funds tracking the index to sell Brent crude futures contracts for December and to buy contracts for June.

The S&P GSCI Enhanced Commodity Index rule aims to ensure that investors are positioned to cash in when oil market fundamentals change - in this case, when supply becomes so tight that the current price of oil becomes higher than the price of oil for delivery many months or years into the future. That structure is called backwardation.

Stock Market Tips; Toady Wall Street News

Wall Street edged higher on Friday, with the Dow extending its streak of record-setting gains to 11 days, as increases in utilities and other safety plays outweighed declines in financials. Major Wall Street indexes have rallied to record levels since the election of Donald Trump as US president, boosted by pledges of tax reforms, reduced regulations and increased infrastructure spending. Equities were in negative territory for a majority of the trading session, however, as investors grew hesitant after recent comments from the Trump administration indicated its pro-growth policies may have a longer route to implementation.

Oil Sold Out Of Tanker Storage In Asia As Market Slowly Tightens

Traders are selling oil held in tankers anchored off Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia in a sign that the production cut led by OPEC is starting to have the desired effect of drawing down bloated inventories. Yet in the short-term, the crude released from tankers will weigh on markets and possibly undermine OPEC's goal of achieving a balanced market by mid-2017.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other producers outside the group, including Russia, announced late last year that they would cut output by almost 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) during the first half of 2017, looking to drain a glut that pulled down prices from over $100 per barrel in 2014 to around $56.50 currently.

Canadian Pulse Crop Sales To India Dry Up Over Pest-Control Plan

Canadian exporters are slowing sales of peas and lentils to India, threatening C$1.1 billion ($762.95 million) in annual trade of the food staples, over risk that New Delhi may reject shipments under its tougher approach to pest control. India requires shippers to fumigate crops with methyl bromide, an insect-killing gas, in the country of origin, but has historically made an exception for Canada, the world's biggest pulse exporter. Methyl bromide, an ozone-depleting substance, is not made in Canada, but is allowed for use in limited situations.

Asian shares took a breather on Friday, hovering just below 1-1/2-year highs as investors braced for a potentially wobbly session after US President Donald Trump called China "grand champions" of currency manipulation. Over the past month or so, financial markets have been buffeted by rising protectionism under the Trump administration, and the President's latest comments on China does little to raise confidence on trade relations between the world's two biggest economies. Commodity Market News; Non-OPEC Compliance With Oil Supply Curbs Improving

Eleven non-OPEC oil producers that joined a global deal to cut output to boost prices have delivered at least 60 percent of promised curbs so far, OPEC sources said on Wednesday, higher than initially estimated. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other producers agreed to cut production by 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) from Jan. 1 to boost prices and get rid of a supply glut.

Compliance numbers were reviewed at a meeting in Vienna on Wednesday comprised of officials from countries monitoring adherence to agreed output levels -- OPEC members Kuwait, Venezuela, Algeria plus non-OPEC Russia and Oman. OPEC President Saudi Arabia also attended. "This meeting shows the seriousness of OPEC and non-OPEC in implementing the agreed cut," an OPEC delegate said.

Stock Market Tips; Jio`s Offer To Compel Rivals To Bundle More Data: Analysts

Reliance Jio's move to end its freebies will come as a "mild" not an "absolute" relief to rivals, who will be forced to match the newcomer's offer and pack more data to stop customer churn, say analysts as per the PTI report. Actions from competition would bring down overall pricing levels in the industry or compel a lot more data content in lower Average Revenue Per User or ARPU bundles, said a note by JP Morgan. "RJio's new pricing plan represents a compelling enough proposition for the post-paid subscribers/high-end pre-paid subscribers of competitors (of ARPU less than Rs 300), who can enjoy a lower ARPU from RJio for incomparably more content.

Bharti packs in 4GB and unlimited voice in its monthly Rs 345 plan through calender year 2017 - it will now have to offer markedly more data to look comparable with RJio and prevent consumer defection.
